A writer for Forbes shares her perspective on the opioid epidemic, revealing her personal connection as she takes care of a loved one struggling with opioid addiction. As she watched the limited series “Painkiller,” she couldn’t help but think about how easily her own life could have taken a similar turn, especially after undergoing spinal surgery. This thought is relatable, reminding readers that anyone could find themselves in a similar situation, making this Netflix series an incredibly important one.

The creators behind the show, which explores the origins of the opioid epidemic and the creation of OxyContin, invested their own personal experiences into the project. Pete Berg, known for his work on NBC’s “Friday Night Lights,” not only executive produced and directed all six episodes but also openly discussed his deep connection to the opioid crisis in a candid interview. Berg’s involvement began when he learned about the project from executive producer Eric Newman and consulting producer Barry Meier.

Berg shared that he has personally known numerous individuals who lost their lives due to opioid-related issues. His recollection of these conversations led him to mentally count the people he knew, a count that reached over a dozen individuals. This sobering reality underscores the gravity of the crisis and emphasizes the urgent need for attention and action.
